Workplace Charging Scheme: Is your business EV ready?

26th May 2021

With the government announcing a ban on the sale of combustion engine cars by 2030 as part of its 10 point Green Plan announced in November 2020, the race to embrace electric vehicles is on. Is your business ready?

Through the Office of Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV), the UK government offers grants to support the wider use of electric and hybrid vehicles. Any business, charity or public authority is eligible to claim the grant towards the cost of installing electric vehicle chargepoints, providing they have dedicated off-street parking for staff or fleet use only.

How does the Workplace Charging Scheme work?

The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is a voucher-based scheme that provides support towards the up-front costs of the purchase and installation of electric vehicle charge-points, for eligible businesses, charities and public sector organisations. Up to 75% of purchase and installation costs can be claimed for, up to a maximum of £350 for each socket and up to a maximum of 40 sockets across all sites for each applicant.

If you are an eligible business or organisation, you can apply for the scheme using the OZEV online application portal. If eligibility checks are successful, you will be issued with a unique identification voucher code via email, which can then be given to any OZEV-authorised WCS installer, such as DSA Electrical.

The vouchers are valid for 6 months from the date of issue, and once the charge points have been installed, the authorised installer will claim the grant from OZEV on your behalf.

The system will calculate the 75 per cent of the declared purchase and installation costs and confirm the exact value of the grant awarded, which will be capped at a maximum of £350 per socket. The chargepoint installation must be completed and the voucher claimed by the installer within the 6-month period.

A voucher can only be redeemed by installers who have been authorised by OZEV for the WCS and have approval from a chargepoint manufacturer to install their chargepoint models, which are approved by OZEV. They must be authorised before they begin installing chargepoints. Application process

Overview of the process for the Workplace Charging Scheme:

  1. Applicant completes online application
  2. Voucher generated
  3. Installer completes installation
  4. Installer submits claim via the portal
  5. Grant level confirmed – up to 75% of the costs, capped at £350
  6. Installer receives grant
  7. Applicant is invoiced by the installer for the remaining cost of installation after the grant has been deducted.
