DSA Electrical’s first female apprentice electrician, Alice Duarte, has been selected for JTL’s Ambassador programme as it opens in the East of England region. The purpose of the programme is to encourage apprenticeship recruitment from all sectors of the population and to encourage more young women to consider a career in building services engineering. The chosen Ambassadors are successful women, working in the industries, who explain their experiences to prospective female recruits at a series of events in the region, culminating in a prestigious visit to the House of Commons in January 2015.
Alice commenced her apprenticeship in August 2012 and is now approaching the end of her second year. When she heard the news about being nominated as an Ambassador, Alice was overwhelmed, commenting “I am thrilled about the possibility I may have to shape the future careers of young women, giving them an insight into my career as an apprentice electrician. I have enjoyed every minute of my apprenticeship so far, and am so excited about the future and how my career will develop”.
DSA Electrical’s apprenticeship programme is now in its eleventh year, and apprentices have been recruited in Business Administration as well as traditional Electrical apprenticeships. The scheme enables the Company to train and retain home grown talent thanks to the career progression it offers and it has proved a huge success since it began in 2003. Managing Director, Rachel Richards, added “we are delighted to be able to offer these opportunities to local young people and to promote the value they bring to both apprentices and employers. We just wish that more employers would offer these programmes”.
