Your CV should include the following information:
Gaining some work experience in the industry not only gives you a head start in terms of understanding the industry and some of the skills and knowledge required, it also demonstrates to potential employers that you are committed and motivated enough to organise some experience yourself. We recommend gaining work experience in the Summer Holidays up to a year in advance of applying for an apprenticeship.
First impressions count at interview. It’s almost impossible to be overdressed but you can underdress for an interview. Making an effort to wear smart clothes and clean, polished shoes will create the right impression.
Be persistent and confident. Sometimes you’ll have to hear a lot of no’s before you hear a yes. Don’t let that put you off. Be confident in your potential, your enthusiasm and what you have to offer!
We accept apprentices aged 16 years and above.
We start collecting CVs in January each year and usually hold interviews each Spring. This process may also include an element of work experience. If candidates have not already received their GCSE results, when grades are released in August this determines whether the minimum entry criteria have been met for college.
We offer a 4 year apprenticeship comprising one day a week at college and four days a week on site with a mentor. Exams are completed throughout each year, followed by a final practical exam (AM2) and the completing of your portfolio during the final year.
You can register at any college local to you, however we currently work closely with Chelmsford College and Colchester Institute.
We pay our apprentices in accordance with national guidelines. If you’re under 19 or in the first year of your apprenticeship you will be paid the Apprentice rate and thereafter we pay National Minimum Wage which increases annually on 1st April. On completion of the NVQ portfolio or on passing the AM2 exam, your salary will increase again and once your JIB card is obtained and you are able to demonstrate you can work competently alone, your salary will jump again as you become a Qualified Electrician.
We expect our apprentices to show commitment and enthusiasm towards their apprenticeship – in both their practical and their college work. We also expect a level of flexibility and willingness to meet the company’s needs, such as occasional weekend work or travel to sites. Apprentices are expected to be ready for work by 7.30am each working day and be willing to travel to site locations independently. Not all site locations have convenient public transport, so having a driving licence is an advantage.
